The Brazilian Way of Leading a Positive Lifestyle

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NMSU chapter.

Brazilians are some of the happiest people on the planet. Despite of all the economic issues and corruption the country faces, Brazilians still find reasons to smile and be positive. This could, of course, be due to that fact that we have some of the best weather, beaches, parties, food and more. However, there are various factors that help contribute to our positivity. Brazilian culture is something that anyone can draw inspiration from to lead a happier lifestyle.

Here are some examples from our culture that can help enhance your way of living:

1. Family and friends come first

While work and money are definitely important factors of life, family and friends are the ones that will always be there for you at the end of the day. In our culture, we don’t think individually but rather about the wellbeing of all the people we care about.

2. Hygiene, Hygiene, Hygiene!

In Brazil, we take our hygiene very seriously like taking showers twice a day and brushing our teeth right after meals. Good hygiene is one step out of many towards reaching a healthy lifestyle, which in turn will also increase your happiness.

3. Eat fresh and exercise more

Brazilians are all about spending time outside and their daily routine includes activities such as jogging at the beach, taking walks at parks or plazas, swimming and playing sports. We care about our body and always try to eat fresh, with a lot of vegetables and fruits. In our culture, we often mix socializing with exercising. There’s no need to go to a movie, where you often don’t talk to your friends, when you can have fun engaging in conversation while enjoying a good game of ‘fútbol’ or soccer.

4. Everything is a reason to celebrate

Parties and get togethers are a common event in Brazilians’ routine. There is no need for a big occasion to celebrate. No achievements are too small to be thankful for. If something good happens, go ahead and celebrate!

5. “Jeitinho Brasileiro”

Jeitinho Brasileiro” is a saying brazilians often use to describe the way they deal with life. In a more literal translation, it’s basically the Brazilian way of doing things. In our mind, no problem is too big that you can’t find a way to go around it to make things better. When life puts you through a tough situation, It is all about the attitude you have to help you overcome life’s difficulties.

6. Be more affectionate

One major difference between other countries and our’s, is when we meet people, we often hug rather than engaging in a stiff handshake. Being affectionate brings you closer to the ones that are around you and helps strengthen relationships.

7. Take your time

If you ever visit Brazil, you will notice that a lot of us tend to take our time with our day-to-day activities. Don’t stress yourself out about finishing something as soon as possible, when you can take your time and do a better job of it.

8. Open yourself to new opportunities and people

Life is too short to live by the status quo. Brazilians believe you can never have enough friends. By this way of thinking, any chance they get turns into an opportunity of meeting new people and enhance your social life and wellbeing.

When she's not running around on campus, you can usually find her in the corner shoving her face with jellybeans. Her favorite hobbies include talking 24/7 about her dog, showing people photos of her dog, and seamlessly fitting her dog into everyday conversations. Did I mention she has a dog?
