Why You Need to be Listening to ‘Anything Goes’

To all who believe that millennials and finance bros are the only ones listening to podcasts, I have a public service announcement for you:

You’re wrong—but more importantly—you’re missing out.

While there is a whole world of millennial-geared and finance-centric podcasts, I’m convinced that there’s a world of podcasts that caters to every single person–including the burned-out college girls trying every possible thing to make their life even ever-so-slightly more put together.

Let me introduce you to Anything Goes with Emma Chamberlain. Sometimes too deep (necessarily so), but always entertaining.

For those of you who, like me, rewatch the occasional old Chamberlain YouTube video when in need of a dose of nostalgic comfort, this is probably going to be your new life-defining experience—and I don’t say that lightly.

There are millions of wellness and self-improvement podcasts out there, each one slightly more boring and slightly more scary than the last. This is where Anything Goes fills in the gap.

Taking self-improvement advice from people who already seem to have their lives put together and appear to be so disconnected from the general population is both off-putting and overwhelming at the same time. From experience, I can tell you that a week of doing Pilates and a month of turning off your phone by 8 PM—while potentially helpful—is not going to immediately or automatically improve your life.

I’m not saying that listening to Anything Goes is the answer to all of your problems in life, but it’s a start.

Each week, Emma publishes two episodes talking about anything she wants to talk about (hence the title). But generally, something related to overall wellness is the subject. Don’t mistake wellness to mean a constant stream of fitness advice though–think more in terms of social and mental wellness.

From episodes about personal growth to episodes about figuring out friendship and love, and the occasional episode about recapping high school stories, Anything Goes truly just feels so personal.

It’s not a podcast meant to just lecture you and hand you advice, but rather one meant to make you feel like you’ve just had a conversation with your best friend, and hopefully leave you feeling better or lighter in some way.

As an avid listener who was informed by Spotify Wrapped that she made it into the single-digit percentage for top listeners of this podcast, I feel knowledgeable enough about this podcast to endorse it.

I’ve been listening to Anything Goes for longer than I care to admit, and I can truly say that it’s made so many small improvements in my life—whether this be instilling mindsets or behaviors or simply just entertaining me–that have added up to a major positive shift in my life.

I can’t promise that Anything Goes with Emma Chamberlain will change your life. But I can promise that it isn’t catered toward millennials or finance bros and that if nothing else, you’ll appreciate the wave of nostalgia. It’ll take you right back to the OG car vlogs.

Riya Kannan is a first-year student at North Carolina State University, studying English and Economics. Though this is her first year as a member of Her Campus, she is incredibly passionate about the intention behind the magazine and is determined to contribute to such an important cause. Outside of Her Campus, Riya is a staff writer with NC State University’s student newspaper, Technician, and a contributing writer at Keke Magazine, a youth feminist online and print publication. Between these two positions, she has written in a plethora of sections–most predominantly news, including business and politics, and culture/entertainment, including film and television. Her expertise in these subjects largely relies on her self-motivated interest in the disciplines, and her determination to ensure that the public stays informed. Riya is also an active member of other groups at NC State University, including Habitat for Humanity and the Financial Literacy Club. Riya was born and raised in and around Greensboro, North Carolina. She loves hockey (though she’s a Canes fan by default, she would never deny her love for the Leafs or Rangers), and enjoys watching movies and TV (possibly to a concerning degree). Her favorite movies include Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Barbie, The Social Network, Priscilla, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and any of the Spider-Man movies. Her current favorite show is Succession, though it should be noted that she's on her sixteenth rewatch of FRIENDS. Riya also loves stand-up comedy more than almost anything and is reluctant to admit that after Taylor Swift, John Mulaney is her most listened to artist on Spotify. She aspires to live in and work out of New York City after graduation.
