Ian Gallagher

On the hit show “Shameless”, Ian Gallagher has been a fan favorite. While the show often brings an element of comedy, his character provides something special to the table. Ian starts the discussion about important topics such as mental health and LGBTQ+ rights. Through the seven seasons the show has aired so far, Ian has experienced intense character development, helping to prove that people are capable of handling these complicated situations.

Mental Health

Ian Gallagher’s character has bipolar disorder. This is when a person experiences alternating periods of elation and depression. Throughout the series, viewers can see Ian struggle with many emotional highs and lows. Ian avoids his struggles for a while but eventually receives the proper help through the assistance of his siblings and Mickey, his boyfriend. The show accurately depicts someone who struggles with bipolar disorder and the right actions to take while struggling.

LGTQ+ Rights

In the beginning of season one, Ian is keeping his sexuality his secret. His brother, Lip Gallagher, finds a hidden cache of hidden gay pornography. At first, he tries to prove to Ian that he is actually straight. He soon accepts his brother and becomes someone Ian can trust and go to for help. Sexuality is something many people have struggled with. Although our society is evolving, children still live in homes and communities that are unaccepting. LGBTQ+ people are under represented. Ian Gallagher’s character helps bring light to people who struggle. He also gives young people someone to relate to in the media. Visibility and representation are so important.
