Staple Pieces for Your New Business Formal Wardrobe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Murray State chapter.

Starting a business formal collection of clothing can be a little stressful because you’ll need more than a few shirts to make a rotation, but if you get these staple pieces you’re ability to mix and match will totally mask the fact that you wore that blazer last week.

So, strap up those heels and take notes because this style guide will be crucial in helping you build your business professional wardrobe and click the picture to shop the item!

Blazers

Blazers are can completely change the look of an outfit, so having a slight variation of colors is essential. Any of these can be paired with an undershirt and a pair of khaki slacks as well as black dress pants. As you develop the business professional side of your closet, you can extend by getting blazers with patterns and accented colors.

Trousers

Dress pants can be tricky because they aren’t always the most comfortable, however, it’s important to find some that are flattering and don’t make you uncomfortable. Whether you’re going to be walking around or going back and forth between you desk and the copier, or your desk and conference rooms, you’ll want some that hug you in all the right places! You cannot go wrong with classic black trousers, but there’s nothing wrong with adding a little extra flair!

Pencil Skirts

These will come in handy on those days you just don’t feel like wearing pants. Dresses are nice, but pencil skirts can upscale all the blouses in your closet. It also has a knack for slimming you down, tightening your waist and giving you a more lengthy appearance. You can always toss a blazer on with it, however, these gems have a way of dressing up an outfit all on their own.

Blouses

Keep in mind while you shop for blouses that you’ll typically want something that can be tucked in unless it’s a peplum hem which is when the bottom of the shirt flares out overtop of your trousers or skirt. This is where we have to balance fashionable and functional. Loose and flowy tops are in, so use that to the best of your ability. Just make sure you’re not on the board line of frumpy. Keep it clean and simple because classy never going out of style.

Tanks

Be sure to get some tanks that can be paired with your blazers. Typically, you’ll be able to toss a blouse on under your blazer, but some days you won’t want all those layers, so keep these key pieces in your closet and dress them up with your high waisted trousers and cute heels!

Classic Heels

Finally, the fun part! Heels make the outfit, but make sure you’re not overdoing it. You cannot go wrong with classic heels. Stay away from the stones and glitter. They’re supposed to compliment your outfit, not steal the show. Go the extra length to guarantee that they’re going to be comfortable work shoes. It doesn’t matter if you work a desk job and you aren’t on your feet that much. They’ll find a way to make you miserable, they always do. And remember, give a girl the right pair of shoes and she can conquer the world.
