@World_Record_Egg Takes a Stance on Mental Health

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Muhlenberg chapter.

The infamous @world_record_egg made headlines during Super Bowl Weekend when it revealed its stance on mental health awareness.

Hulu released a short, 30-second animation on February 3rd, aptly titled “The Reveal,” which featured the egg fully hatching due to the “pressure of social media.” It encouraged its viewers to “talk to someone” if they were struggling with mental health issues. This unsuspected reveal has garnered more than seventeen million views on Instagram, providing a huge platform for the otherwise lack of mental health awareness worldwide. Since then, @world_record_egg launched a website listing useful links that caters and resources for those struggling and encouraged its audience to contribute to the ever-growing list.

The reveal was initially announced on January 18, 2019 when a photo of the cracked egg was posted on Instagram. Account owner, Chris Godfrey finally revealed the cause after posting a series of photos of the egg hatching, and announced that mental health awareness “will be the first of many causes” to be promoted.

The Egg became a viral phenomenon on Instagram less than a month ago when an anonymous person posted a picture of a plain brown egg, captioned “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this!” The post received over 52 million likes, almost three times as much as Kylie Jenner’s post announcing the birth of her daughter, Stormi. The Egg has since gained a huge cult following and released “Egg Gang” and “I Liked the Egg” merchandise to showcase its newfound fame.
