Small Organizations That Are Making a Difference

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Muhlenberg chapter.

There are so many charities and organizations out in the world making a huge difference every day. However, oftentimes, we only hear about the biggest and most popular ones, such as UNICEF and Moms Demand Action. While these large organizations make an amazing difference,  many smaller ones often go ignored and underappreciated. Here are three small organizations that are making big waves to help humanity.

Bikers Against Child Abuse

They may appear to be mean and intimidating, but in the case of this bike gang, there is more to them than meets the eye. Bikers Against Child Abuse (i.e. BACA) is an organization that has been around since the ‘90s, with a mission to protect children from their abusers. BACA uses a sort of “buddy” system to help scared, abused children know that they have a support system of people who will protect and care for them. The children are assigned to two members of BACA who they can contact for support any time they feel unsafe. The members can help the children with things such as escorting them through their neighborhoods, staying with them if they are alone and frightened, and attending court and interview dates with the child. Children who are in this program are considered members for life, and many have gone on to help end child abuse themselves. Every member truly believes in the cause, as many of the bikers were victims of child abuse themselves. Learn more at http://bacaworld.org.

The Pediatric Cancer Foundation

Did you know that childhood cancer is the #1 non-accidental cause of death in children from ages one to fourteen? Did you know that only four percent of the money donated for cancer research goes to help end pediatric cancer? That’s where the Pediatric Cancer Foundation steps in to help. In 2017 alone, PCF raised half a million dollars for childhood cancer research centers such as NYU Langone Medical Center, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, and The University of Chicago Medical Center. Rates of childhood cancer have been rising within the past 10 years, mostly due to the fact that newer and better technology has been developed to help detect it. PCF’s goal is to continue to develop this technology in order to detect cancer early on and prevent tragedy. In addition, they are also working to develop research to find a cure, so that one-day childhood cancer may be a thing of the past. However, they need the funds to make it happen. The world is filled to the brim with passionate people who believe in making a difference. Whether large or small, these and other organizations can do so much good, as long as others can recognize their efforts and believe in their fight. Want to make a change or fight for a cause you believe in? It’s so easy to get involved through your school, community, church, etc. You just have to do some research and put yourself out there.
