The Ultimate Mount Holyoke Playlist For Doing Anything

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mt Holyoke chapter.

Looking for some new music to fit your “aesthetic”? Going to an all women’s college, do you feel the need to be “edgy”? Looking for some DIY girl power groups/soloists? Look no further, I have all of your aesthetic, looks-good-as-an-LP/cassette hits by the most niche DIY girl groups of this day and age. In other words, get ready to get MoHoey.

1. “Ideal World” – Girlpool

This not-necessarily-anti-percussionist all girl group (of really just two girls) strikes a heart string that makes you want to sing along to their stripped down vocals and live-feel. Ideal World is a retro-reflection on the real world and an ideal world. Grab your high-waisted jeans and your best gal-pal and sing along (if you can).

2.  “A Burning Hill” – Mitski

More on the slow-side, Mitski looks into, and well touches, the feeling of emptiness, loneliness, anxiety, stress, all in about three minutes. Watching herself burn, her world burn, from burning point to vantage point, the constant change in perspective may just give you perspective too.

3.“I’m Not the Money” – Katie Von Schleicher

Distorted, wavering, moving. Katie Von Schleicher delivers this perfect ballad that easily exudes grimy rock. It will put you in the mood for a nice cup of tea, bed, a book, or you can simply lie in the dark and listening to it on loud.

4. “Pigeon” – Tennis

Probably My #1 Top Pick for the Fall. Pigeon is actually not about a bird so… This is a new wave swing song that throws you back to the 60’s. This cute lovey-dovey love song is the perfect ambience to cuddle up with your bestie or your stuffed animal and sing aloud to proclaim your gushy cuteness.

5.“The Depths” – Cross Record

When you are summoned to the depths, you hear a siren’s distant call. With minimal percussion, guitar, and vocals, this song rocks you gently into a transcendental and subconscious state of etherealism. Let it’s low maintenance melody slow down your heart rate, lower you blood pressure, and rock you in the waves.

6.“Vegas” – Big Thief

While you’re getting ready in the morning, make sure to put this song on to get you in a good mood. You can sing along and pretend you’re in a music video (obviously using the back of your hairbrush as your mic). With dynamic beats and layered instruments, this song is perfect for making you feel ready for the day.

7. “Bring Me a Rose” – Jenn Grant

One of my personal favorites by Jenn Grant, “Bring Me a Rose” is a folk song that lets your mind linger on/wander to your hometown or your mom. It will make you feel nostalgic for home, but in only all the good ways.

8.“Something” – Julien Baker

If you’re feeling down or alone, this is another great song recorded by Julien Baker DIY style. Her EP was simply done with her and her guitar. Her naturally compressed voice seeps into your soul to touch the most regretful and painful parts of your past to relieve the pressure.

9. “Hair Receding” – Xenia Rubinos

“Hair Receding” is the tightest song by the incredibly talented Xenia Rubinos which supplies you with polyphonic rhythms and a crystalised voice. Make sure you listen to this song loudly, and if you are in need of a mood booster this definitely should be at the top of your list.

10. “Poison” – Waxahatchee

While walking on campus as I look at the leaves that are beginning to change, I think of Waxahatchee’s album cover and I think of this song. This melodic rock tune puts you in the mood for fall outings to Northampton, big sweaters, crisp air, and a nice hot cider from the Thirsty Mind. (Oh my God I love fall so much).

As the fall season comes and you’re getting ready to spend time in the cool crisp air, take time to sketch the trees, meditate in the leaves, and enjoy the threshold between the hot summer and freezing, timid winter. Enjoy the nature with this playlist!
