The Feathered Wildlife of Lower Lake

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mt Holyoke chapter.

For some people, connecting with the flora and fauna around them is an essential practice. Whether it be during a walk to class, or while sitting outside to take a phone call, those moments can be revitalizing. Mount Holyoke College has much to offer in the way of beautiful natural surroundings; a favorite of mine is Lower Lake. Lower Lake is the home of several animal MHC residents! I invite you, the reader, to consider making a visit to Lower Lake should you ever desire a break from your studies.

Jorge is the most well known feathered-friend of Lower Lake. He is a notorious spirit and Moho’s unofficial mascot. He’s rough around the edges (don’t get too close), but is all the more charming for it. Truth be told, it’s Jorge’s world and we’re just living in it. He can be heard honking at any time of day (even from my dorm room in 1837 Hall). He’s got a strong pair of lungs on him. When you get a chance, head over to Lower Lake and say hello to Jorge from a distance!

Jorge’s posse is a group of ducks that can be seen trailing their downy leader around the lake from dawn till dusk. Very team-oriented, very cute! I’ve witnessed them floating with their heads tucked around for a nap. Ten out of ten, I would recommend visiting them!

The great blue heron of Lower Lake resides below the waterfall beyond spider bridge. This majestic creature stands on rocky perches day in and day out, observing. Whether this heron’s critical eye is aimed for catching prey or directed towards its many admirers, it surely sees all. This bird is definitely my personal favorite to be found on Lower Lake.

Canadian geese have also recently made Lower Lake their home. Pictured above, they enjoy lounging and snacking on the lake’s grassy banks. I’ve witnessed some bickering amongst this flock, so there’s definitely some action there. These lovely geese are a New England classic that remind me of home!

Lower Lake has much wildlife to be explored. In my experience, being around animals we share this Earth with is grounding and valuable. Sometimes a staring contest with a stoic heron is just what I need to be present! Take some time to walk around Lower Lake to meet its various birds, or even to spot turtles, squirrels and chipmunks. Whatever your preference, may you discover some appreciation for the wildlife of Lower Lake.
