Women’s History Month Events at Michigan State University

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

Women’s History Month is celebrated in March throughout the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia, to highlight women’s contributions both historically and to current society. International Women’s Day is also celebrated on March 8. Here are several notable Women’s History Month events hosted at MSU related to add to your calendar.

WILD Leadership Development Workshop

According to the American Association of University Women, women are underrepresented in leadership roles across many different fields, making up only 18% of state governors, 30% of college presidents, 7.2% of Fortune 500 CEOs, and 12.6% of Hollywood directors. If you are an aspiring leader, attend the WILD Leadership Development Workshop, occurring in the Student Services Building, Room 6 on Wednesdays from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. on March 6, March 13, March 27, and April 3. Sessions will discuss topics ranging from how gender socialization affects aspiring women leaders to tips on how to navigate organization structures. The workshop will cover content from the book “We Are the Leader We’ve Been Waiting For: Women and Leadership Development in College.” You can register with this link.

International Women’s Day Open House

Co-sponsored by Women*s Student Services and the Office of Cultural & Academic Transitions, the International Women’s Day Open House will take place in Room 14 of the Student Services Building on March 8 from 1 to 3 p.m. Stop by to sample free food and receive free t-shirts and swag.

REDress Project Exhibition

You may notice a display of 60 red shirts and dresses hung up along West Circle Drive. This is the REDress Project Exhibition, which aims to raise awareness of the epidemic of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls, which does not get the media attention it deserves. This art installation will be displayed until March 17.

Women’s Networking Association Networking Breakfast

Hear a presentation from seasoned business professional Shelley Davis Boyd and have the opportunity to network with other women across campus at the Networking Breakfast. The Women’s Networking Association is sponsoring this event, which will be held at the Food Safety & Toxicology building in Rooms 162 and 163 on March 13 from 8-10 a.m. Registration is available here. If you are unable to attend, the presentation will be recorded and made available for viewing.

Sisterhood Luncheon

Hosted by MSU’s Womxn of Color Initiatives and the MSU Women of Color Community, the sisterhood luncheon will offer an opportunity to meet other women of color and allies and hear from guest speaker Paige Hernandez. Womxn of Color Initiatives’ current artist-in-residence, Hernandez is a multi-talented interdisciplinary artist, director, choreographer, playwright, and actor. The luncheon will take place on March 21 in the Main Library’s Green Room from 12:30-2 p.m.

While Women’s History Month is packed with interesting events centering on women’s issues and created by and for women, many of the organizations sponsoring events this month host events year-round. Attending Women’s History Month events is a great opportunity to connect with these partners to get involved even beyond March.
