‘Tis the season! It’s officially November, and it’s time for the Christmas festivities to begin!
Many people believe that beginning Christmas festivities in November is too early, or that we’re ignoring Thanksgiving by skipping right to celebrating Christmas. Yet, I can assure you that that isn’t the case, and there’s a simple reason for it — Christmas is a season.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a season in this context as “a period of the year characterized by or associated with a particular activity or phenomenon.” This means that the Christmas season would be a period of the year (two or more months), as opposed to Thanksgiving Day, which is just, a day. A mere 24 hours in the middle of the Christmas season.
This isn’t to discount Thanksgiving, as it is something to celebrate, but Thanksgiving celebrations only last for the duration of that day. Unless maybe you’re traveling for it to see friends and/or family. Christmas festivities happen for far longer than just one day, instead occurring over many, many, many days — shopping, ice skating, Christmas light shows, decorating, baking, and so much more. It’s so much that you can’t do it all in one day. It’s simply impossible.
So, start decorating now! Get in the Christmas spirit — drink hot chocolate, bake cookies, put up your tree, and deck the halls! There’s no such thing as starting too early for Christmas, but there is such a thing as starting too late. Begin celebrating when the season actually begins, and don’t miss out on any of the fun of Christmastime cheer! Happy holidays!
