Top Five Ways to Relieve Period Cramps

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

Once a woman hits a certain age, they get their period, which usually comes once a month but can vary from person to person. With periods comes bleeding, pain, and emotional rollercoasters. The pain is typically caused by menstrual cramps which occurs when your uterus contracts, causing mild to severe discomfort. Here are a couple of easy ways to relieve the pain caused by period cramps.

Heating Pad

Heat relaxes your muscles and therefore helps relieve cramps. Putting a heating pad or hot water bottle on your lower back or on your belly helps ease the pain and makes it more bearable. If you don’t have a heating pad, then make one yourself by putting rice in a sock and heating it up.

Painkillers

Over the counter medication such as Advil, Aleve, and Tylenol can really help relieve the pain for a couple of hours. Although it isn’t the best option for your body, painkillers are a promising option to ease your cramps.

Rest

Resting helps relax the body and helps take your mind off of the pain. When you are on your period, your body loses a lot of blood, often causing an iron deficiency. This causes your body to be tired and cramping adds pain to the mix. Resting will help your body relax and rejuvenate during this time.

Taking a Hot Bath

Aforementioned, heat relaxes your muscles and helps ease the cramps. Taking a hot bath helps your entire body relax and will help relieve the pain from the cramps and any other body pain that comes with it.

Exercise

Aerobic exercises such as running, spinning, and dancing help get the blood circulating throughout your body which helps reduce your cramps and menstrual pains. Exercises that focus on your pelvis such as yoga or pelvic tilts can also help ease your period cramps.
