The Dropout on Hulu: Review of the First Few Episodes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

“The Dropout” on Hulu, starring Amanda Seyfried, is based on true life events about the crimes committed by Elizabeth Holmes. For a short summary of what Elizabeth Holmes did, she was known for starting a company called Theranos that promised their product was able to test for diseases from a single drop of blood, but it was then exposed to be a scam that harmed people testing the box and also all the investors of Theranos.

“The Dropout” starts with Elizabeth Holmes still in high school, with plans to go into Stanford and to change the world with an invention of her own. As the episodes progress, it starts showing Elizabeth’s hunger for power and to be admired. It shows her being manipulated by her older lover who she met when she was still in high school, and all of Holme’s techniques for how she got investors to start trusting her.

I was worried that this show would glorify criminals, similar to Leonardo Dicaprio’s character in the film “Catch Me If You Can.” Though I have to say that with the few episodes that are out right now, the directors and actors are doing a great job of bringing emotion and backstory to the characters, but at the same time they show Elizabeth’s manipulative side and the roots for her eventual downfall. It is a recommended watch for anyone into dramas, and for viewers like me who enjoy psych-analyzing how characters behave to predict their next step.
