It has been my dream for as long as I can remember to travel to Spain. Madrid has called my name since I first started learning Spanish, and this summer I am fortunate enough to be able to travel to Madrid for two months. I applied to intern abroad through MSU, and after being accepted into the program, I started learning more about studying abroad. Here are some key tips if you’re thinking about studying abroad.

Determine what type of program is best for you: Education abroad has several different programs. There are study abroad programs, internship abroad programs, and research opportunities. Some will be held through your university and other programs may be held through outside organizations.

Figure out how long you can stay abroad. Can you plan to stay abroad for a semester, or do other commitments only allow you to go abroad for two weeks?

What country suits you? If you are learning a language, this answer may seem obvious to travel to a country which speaks that language. But, it isn’t always that simple. You will have to search for programs that fit your needs, values, and opportunities. It is important to not choose a location simply based on aesthetics. You have to ask yourself: can I live here for a bit?

Costs can skyrocket! I was not prepared for how expensive internships abroad are. Take some time to prioritize your finances and decide if you can afford the tuition, program fees, plane tickets, and any other costs during your stay abroad.

Research, research, research. I cannot stress how important it is to do your research. After I was accepted into the Madrid program, I spent hours looking into Spanish fashion, food, and customs. It is important that you don’t act like a tourist in your host country; you should embrace your host country’s culture!

Going abroad is the opportunity of a lifetime, and I am so thrilled to be traveling to Madrid this Summer. It is important to talk with career counselors as well, so don’t forget to do your research. Good luck!
