In the darkness of the night, the street lights lit up the gravel gray road on the Detroit Riverwalk. The night echoed in utter silences. Only the sounds of the crashing water against the concrete walls of the walkway, brought the night a sense of serenity. It was nights like this that made Alma Driver enjoy her regular evening runs. Miss Driver, who had lived in the bustling town of Detroit for nearly 25 years, was captivated by the tranquility of the picturesque dark sky. For the night meant something special for Alma, it was her escape, her most desirable place to be from the bustling commotions of the city life.

Pacing along the sidewalk of the Detroit Riverwalk, Alma’s shoes came undone. “Perfect timing I could use a break,” said Alma. Alma bent down to tie the slippery, loose lace of her gray Adidas running shoes. When she was finished tying her shoes, Alma looked across to see the foreign freighters, with their unshakable force, crossing the calm bluish waters. In that moment of peace, Alma decided to take a break from her tiresome run and hoisted herself on the slim bar of the railing that stood before her. She used both her hands to steady herself along the icy railing, to make sure she wouldn’t fall into the frigid waters below.

On top of the railing, Alma was flabbergasted by the sheer beauty of the so-called famous Detroit River, getting a small glimpse of Detroit’s famous island, Belle Isle, which was directly across from the Riverwalk. The breeze blew through Alma’s ginger hair with extreme force, as her braided hair flopped between the left and right sides of her neck. Alma could not help but smile in that pure second of tranquility. “I love the night,” Alma said softly into the bleak darkness. “I love the night.”

After enjoying a good five-minute rest, Alma descended down from the cold-iron railing and mental persuaded herself to continue on her track. But before Alma continued on with her daily run, she turned to the corner of her eye and saw an object drifting underneath the railing in the river below. Over stuck with curiosity, Alma took hold of the railing, using it once again as support, and leaned her petite frame down towards the mysterious object to get a better look. Upon closer examination Miss Alma Driver stepped back from the railing, cupped her mouth and screamed at the realization of what she just saw. Readjusted her quivering body, she looked once more to ensure herself that her eyes were not playing tricks on her. Unfortunately, Alma’s eyes did not betray her and she discovered something that no one would expect to be drifting around in the Detroit River: a dead body.
