RECAP: How to Effectively Communicate with Colleagues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

Frequently check your email

You should be checking your email at least once a day! Putting it on your phone could help with this if you haven’t done so already.

Be an active listener

It’s helpful to take notes at each meeting! This way you’re sure you don’t miss what important things were said.

Speak up if you have ideas

Don’t be shy! If you have any ideas or input, feel free to share them.

Ask for advice

You should be able to talk to your fellow members, so if you have any questions, never hesitate to ask around.

Get to know your fellow members

This doesn’t just mean sitting by them at meetings, but seeing if they’d want to grab lunch or coffee sometime! Always make sure to come to team bonding events, not only because they’re fun but because you’ll get to know more people as well.

Be present

When someone is speaking to you, try not to check your phone and put away other distractions. Actually listen to what they have to say!

Give good feedback

If someone presents an idea you don’t see fit, try and think of an alternative! Give constructive criticism while still respecting their thoughts and opinions.

Keep a positive attitude

As long as you remain positive and keep an optimistic outlook, communicating and building relationships will come that much easier!
