Here’s the “Tea” on Tea

“OMG, you should start drinking tea! It’s so good for you and has so many benefits!” 

It is fair to say that most people have heard this line before (at least I know I have). However, have you ever really thought about what makes tea good for you? Or what are the benefits of the type of tea you’re drinking? 

If you’re going to drink tea, it is important to know that you are helping your body in some regard. That said, here are the benefits of five common teas that people drink!

 

Green Tea

Green tea is a popular beverage in Asian countries, especially Japan. It is proven to contain properties that help reduce cancer and blood pressure. Also, it can help increase brain functioning and productivity as well as help you to live longer. 

 

Peppermint Tea

Most people associate peppermint tea with assisting as a digestive aid. Though this is true, did you know that peppermint tea has antibacterial properties that can help fight bad breath? Moreover, if you’re looking to lose weight — this bright, fresh, minty tea can help you be fuller for longer at zero calories!

Chamomile Tea 

I do not drink chamomile tea often, but when I do, it’s often after a long day. Chamomile is excellent before going to bed as it acts as a relaxant. That said, with its warm, cinnamon-like flavor, chamomile can also help reduce anxiety.

Ginger Tea

If you like tea with more of a kick, ginger tea should definitely be at the top of your list. However, aside from having a “spicier” flavor, it has also been proven to help in relieving menstrual cramps and fighting nausea and inflammation.

Rose Hip Tea

Ladies, forget the anti-aging creams —start investing in rose hip tea! Rose hip tea contains anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants that can assist in preventing skin from aging and collagen from breaking down. That said, aside from its anti-aging properties, it is significantly high in Vitamin C.

Time for tea! 

Ellia Flejtuch is a freshman at Michigan State University studying Dietetics and Psychology.
