AE: Skinny Skinny Jeans

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

When checking out the latest deals on American Eagle.com, we couldn’t help but be completely confused when we saw the new ad campaign for the “Skinny Skinny” jeans. On the website, they have a video advertising this revolutionary type of skinnier, skinny jeans. When you see what they are selling, you note they are offering 2 different shades of “denim” in the form of body paint.

Yes, American Eagle is making fun of everyone’s desire to have the skinniest jeans–with body paint. After viewing the video a second time, it is clear to see the models aren’t wearing any pants at all, simply the body paint. The website advertises these jeans to “sit low on the waist” and features new “skintight technology” which makes it seem like an actual pair of pants, until you look at the product picture of a spray can. While this is meant as a joke, this idea of body paint pants highlights society’s lack of want to wear denim.

More and more do you see leggings and yoga pants, and less denim. Most jean companies are now offering “jeggings”, which have barely any denim in them, because the audience wants to feel the level of comfort in a pair of cotton leggings. American Eagle is taking these jeggings a few steps further (and maybe a few steps too far) but it can give us a good laugh about the idea of painting on our clothes. American Eagle won’t say much about the intentions behind these “Skinny Skinny” jeans, but one hopes it is an April Fools joke that was released a bit early!
