6 Things You Can Learn From F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

“I’ll be there for you ’cause you’re there for me too.”

Originality

Everyone always tells us to be ourselves, but it’s hard not to conform to society’s norms and standards. It is something that we must continuously fight against. Phoebe is a perfect role model for anyone who struggles with society’s pressure to fit in. She does her own thing – writing songs, playing her guitar and even changing her name to Princess Consuela Banana Hammock. She is the epitome of originality and being yourself.

Love

Not in only in the sense of falling in love with someone, but falling in love in with what is around you – nature, the community, your friends and what you hold near and dear. Most importantly, you should fall in love with yourself. In order to truly fall in love with another, you must first fall in love with yourself. Love like Ross loves. It may not always work out, as he’s had many divorces, but his love is pure and that is shown through his love of Rachel, Ben and paleontology.

Humor

Something that can always brighten someone’s day is humor. Coming across a funny joke, picture, video, gif or meme can just bring a smile to your face. Even better is spending time with people you care about and having a good time. Despite his job in finance which he loathes, Chandler enjoys hanging out with his friends at Central Perk. He is known for his jokes and trying to bring a sense of  humor to his life and that of his friends.

Determination

In order to reach whatever goals we have in life, we must have determination. We cannot just assume that whatever it is will be easy for us, we must work hard for it – no matter how long it takes or how challenging it might become. Monica, an extremely organized and persistent person, does whatever it takes to be the best at whatever she puts her mind to. She doesn’t complete a task without giving it her all.

Spontaneity

Sometimes our days are filled with set routines. It’s important to remember to live in the moment and take chances, even within the day-to-day pace we live by. Rachel exemplifies spontaneity. Her story starts with leaving Barry at the altar, getting cut off from her father’s money and then taking the chance of trying to find Monica in New York. Sometimes life needs splashes of spontaneous action.

Happiness

No matter what life throws at us, we must remember to make happiness our goal. Sometimes we dream of a life that may not leave us in the best place financially, but it is important that we do what makes us happy. We must also spend time around people who make us happy. Joey always follows his heart and does what makes him happy. It is well-known that being an actor isn’t always the best paying job, especially just starting out. But he follows his dreams and becomes an actor – taking whatever small roles he got – because that is what makes him happy. When he isn’t working as an actor, he spends time with his friends.
