5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Turning 22

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

The time has come where I can finally say that I feel 22 but, do I really feel 22? Nothing in our lives can prepare us to be a year older and every responsibility and experience that comes with it. There are many things that I wish I was ready to experience or just have someone to tell me that it’s all part of becoming older. Many of us may not go through the same path but, my hope is to keep everyone company on this journey.

  1. I’m in my freaking 20s

Yes, I may be turning 22 but, even when I turned 20 and 21 I still felt like I was 16-18. It was a rough wake up call, a call that we all need to realize what we have in front of us.

  1. Adulting

This was very complex for me. One part of me was excited to do things my way as an adult but, another part of me felt like I was letting the little girl inside of me die. I keep the little girl inside of me happy and alive by doing things she would like such as watching kid movies or having ice cream for dinner. Adulting may be hard but you make make it more enjoyable by finding how to make it fun.

  1. 22 but feeling 62

I always thought I would feel so young in my 20s. Turns out, I need lights out by 10pm and asleep by 12am in order to function normally the next day.

  1. Making friends can be hard and that’s okay

Sometimes hearing people our age talk about their friend groups and how long they’ve been together can be hard. No one ever said you were obligated to have friends to have a good life. Everyone is different and we can all make friends at different ages and stages of our lives. If it’s meant to be, it’ll happen at the perfect time.

  1. Losing friends is completely normal

We may feel like something is wrong when we start losing friends but, that’s actually a good thing. It’s okay though because everyone grows and learns how to do things differently. Losing friends can be hard but the important thing to know is that you are not alone and this is meant to be.

There are probably other things that we can all learn along the way. Everyone has a different way of handling things or maybe you’ve had experiences that taught you something similar. Turning 22 can have multiple meanings, good or bad, but always know that 23 can be better or worse, it’s all what you make it.
