15 Things I Wish I Knew Freshman Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

1. Don’t wear your lanyard around your neck, ever. It screams freshman — better yet — freshmeat. You also won’t be let into parties; I learned that the hard way.

2. Your RA can be the best OR worst thing that ever happened to you. Tread with caution.

3. It’s really okay to change your major. It’s actually more surprising if you don’t.

4. Missing your Combo-X-Change is real life tragedy.

5. Nobody has their life figured out, not even those people in the seemingly more impressive fields. Just because their jobs sound more fancy and prestigious doesn’t mean that yours isn’t.

6. It’s OKAY to be homesick and scared. Don’t ever let anyone make you feel like you can’t go home.

7. With that said, don’t hold onto the past so tightly you can’t embrace the future.

8. It’s okay to not enjoy what everyone else seems to (i.e. getting wasted at fraternities).

9. Some of your best friends will be the people you least expect.

10. Riding the bus off campus can be sketchy. As ridiculous as this sounds, use the buddy system!

11. Always refer to the syllabus!!!

12. I cannot stress this enough: Get to know your professors. Go to office hours.

13. In general, people are nice and want to make friends just as much as you do.

14. Everyone has fairy lights for decorations in their dorms.

15. Netflix will be your new best friend (if it wasn’t before).
