Ridiculous Fashion & Beauty Trends of the 90’s

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

As fashion history repeats itself and steps back into one of the most stylish decades, shoppers are seeing a resurgence of 90’s inspired silhouettes and beauty trends.

A time period known for its quirky memorabilia and grunge scene is bound to produce its fair share of questionable trends. The 90’s were a simple era, a time where celebrities emulated real people. Most of them even went through an awkward stage in comparison to the primped up and clean cut versions of themselves that are presented via Instagram today.

Fashion has never failed to raise the eyebrows of those on the outside looking in, while true fashionistas rarely find a trend they don’t like. Perhaps those looking to copycat vintage looks can learn a thing or two from the wackiest fashion and beauty trends of this decade.

Soda can hair rollers

Struggling to find a no-heat alternative to curling those luscious locks? Have no fear, soda cans are here. Simply go to a local convenience store, pick up a six pack (or 12 if you’re feeling frisky) of soda then run home and get to popping those suckers in. A 90’s gal has got to do what a 90’s gal has got to do.

Popcorn shirts

Desperate times call for desperate measures, in the name of fashion that is. Popcorn shirts are still sold in places like Rite Aid and Walgreens for reasons unbeknownst to me. These rumpled up looks could fit anyone from a medium sized turtle to Reptar himself.

Kool-Aid hair dye

Just the tip is the motto when it comes to Kool-Aid hair dyeing techniques. With the help of artificial dyes and food coloring, those looking to spice up their lives with a new do’ can achieve it without all of the commitment.

Skinny Brows

From 2018 to Gwen Stefani, we are so sorry the 90’s put you through those brows. Eyebrows on fleek or eyebrows on eek? Let’s leave this trend where it belongs, in the past.

Low Rise Pants

Rather than accentuating the hips, true 90’s girls made it a fashion statement to ditch a few inches of fabric and just reveal them instead. To each their own!

Whatever this is

There are truly no words.

All goth everything

Body piercings, chokers and frowning, oh my! Honestly, nothing screams high fashion more than black clothes and looks of disdain.

While extremely outdated, these fashion faux pas are staples in the lives of many. They continue to trudge along, being revamped in order to live on in the closets of college students everywhere. Those of which who are just trying to live out their nostalgic 90’s dreams.
