Dying for Pie: Sweet Treats to Bake for Yourself this Fall!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

November is right at the door! Thanksgiving is just around the corner! For many people in the world, this month exemplifies gratitude, giving, friendship, and family. For the rest of us, it’s all about the food.

It just so happens that autumn, also known as ‘Harvest Season’, likes to tempt us with goodies. And why shouldn’t it? As the weather cools down outside, we find ourselves warming up a meal in the oven. It’s the peak time for baking, so if you’re bored at home and have all the ingredients, get up off your bum and make a pie!

Here are some yummy treats to bake for yourself this fall!

Apple Pie

It may be the go-to recipe for anyone who has extra apples, but for good reason! Apple pie is delicious, easy, and convenient. You can snack on it during breakfast, lunch, and dinner (just as long as that’s not all you eat)!

Banana or Pumpkin Bread

Pumpkin is definitely the more preferred flavor in light of the fall season, but either recipe works! Fresh banana bread is warm and aromatic— a bright start to your morning. Banana or pumpkin bread tastes best warm, even if you have to heat it up. So I wouldn’t advise gulping down that bread straight out of the refrigerator.

Ube Cookies

A type of yam grown in the Philippines, ube has a distinct flavor and can be baked into brownies, cakes, or cookies. Ube cookie crinkles can be thrown together just from yam, flour, eggs, baking powder, butter, and sugar. And if you’re feeling dangerous, add some white chocolate chips!

Sweet Potato Pie

Every year, the Thanksgiving dessert standoff is sweet potato pie versus pumpkin pie.  The only way for one to settle this debate is to put the former on this list instead of the latter (sorry guys)! Sweet potato pie is a staple in American families; it was even a major plot device in the family dramedy ‘Almost Christmas.’ And it tastes so freaking good.

Apple Cobbler

If apple pie takes a little too much of your time, apple cobbler is an easy solution that’s great warm or chilly! All you need to do is make the apple filling and batter separate, then bake ‘em together in a pan. It’s sweet and simple! Layer some rich vanilla ice cream on top, and you’ve got a one-way ticket to paradise.

So don’t spend too much time in bed ruminating about turkey when you can have your very own early Thanksgiving with the ingredients lying around your house! Make sure to share with family, and most importantly, do not eat it all in one sitting. Taste is essential, but so is nutritional value. Enjoy!
