Surviving Midterms

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MNSU chapter.

It’s that time of year again! Midterms! Okay, I know what you’re thinking. It’s only September, why are we talking about midterms?! One of the best ways for you to ace those tests is to start early!

Don’t Cram.

This may sound smart at the time, but cramming has proved to rarely work. If you study the material slowly and start a few days before your exams, there’s a higher chance that you will not only do better but remember more of the material. Take the material one chapter at a time and make sure to take breaks in between, that will give you the opportunity to relax and rest your mind.

Use a Friend.

One of the best ways to study is to have someone do it with you. Use a friend from class and go over topics that you both may not understand. Make flashcards or even just quiz each other on keywords and topics. This way, you both can better learn the material and might just have fun doing it! If you don’t have a friend in that class, just use a roommate and have them ask you questions about the material and they can quiz you just like you would with a friend!

Relax.

Watch Netflix, take a walk, spend time with family. Do something that takes your mind off what you have to study for. That way, you can come back to the material feeling refreshed and with new eyes. You may miss important information or material by over-studying. It’s best to take a break, maybe binge-watch Netflix, and forget what you learned. Okay, don’t forget everything, but this would allow you to come back to the material and address any problems you had beforehand.

Though it’s just a few tips, they may become helpful when it’s time for you to study. Use these and any other test strategies you have and crush those exams! Good luck!
