At last, the time is here. The glorious days of summer are winding down. Underneath the heat, there is that glimmer of an autumnal breeze, which can only mean it is time to go back to school. With this season comes a ton of mixed feelings, from pure excitement to utter dread. The first day on campus is sure to fire up some elevated feelings on all ends of the spectrum. It goes a little something like this:

1. You almost get off on the wrong subway stop

This may be exclusive to us city kids, but any normal school routine is quickly forgotten over the summer. We all get a little rusty, and the first day usually catches us in our tracks. Bonus points if you catch yourself before getting off at the wrong stop.

2. Everything feels so unfamiliar but so familiar at the same time

It’s been a good 3.5 months since you’ve set foot on campus, and everything feels like a slightly distant memory. It’s all a little foggy when you get back. Thoughts like, “what year is this?”, or “did I ever even leave?” are par for the course.

3. You get to see your friends

Most definitely the best part of the day. You are likely to have reunited with your closest pals prior to the first day of classes, but all of your acquaintances and other friendly faces will be at every corner. You’ll get tired of talking about how your summer was (the generic conversation starter), but you will love seeing each person again.

4. You get to see your favorite professors, and meet new ones too

If you are like me, bumping into your favorite professors is a huge highlight of the new school year. It’s so great to have them back in your life. Meeting your new ones is equally as fun- until the syllabus comes out of course.

5. You think you’re ready for school

After all these months of doing next to nothing, you are probably itching to get back to some sort of routine. It’s time to learn!

6. But then you get to class

Once that heavy syllabus (metaphorically of course) drops into your lap, you start to second guess how ready you were for this. After all, just yesterday you were soaking up the summer sunshine, or at least the glare of your laptop screen, and now you already have assignments. It’s time to rip the band-aid off I guess.

7. You get excited for what’s to come

With all the stresses that come with the beginning of the semester, it’s undoubtedly an extremely exciting time. You set new hopes and goals, you get a fresh start with brand new classes, and it’s still kind of warm at least?…. At this point, you know it’ll be great!
