Preppy Fashion Trends to Follow This Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

While we cherish the final days of shorts and open-toed shoes, we welcome the new season with all things prep. No longer just for country clubs and prep school, preppy-inspired fashion was all over the 2021 runways. From polos to sweater vests to loafers, preppy inspired looks will be all across campus

With the “Gossip Girl” reboot and the trending #oldmoney hashtag on TikTok, influencers and stylists have been incorporating the preppy style into the latest fashion trends. But it’s not the Lily Pulitzer dresses and L.L. Bean duck boots that are usually associated with prep, but a more street-style, athleisure-inspired look. Keep scrolling to see five preppy trends we can’t get enough of.

1. Loafers

Fall will always bring about new boots and booties, but this season, loafers are the new “it” shoes. A pair of leather loafers are the perfect shoe to complete your fall outfits. Reinvented this season with chunky soles and metal detailing for an edgier look, these shoes are great for all-day wear, especially while walking to class. Loafers can instantly dress up any casual piece in your wardrobe, like denim or sweatpants.

2. Headbands

The biggest accessories for this fall and winter are headbands. From bejeweled and sleek, to simpler headbands are being worn by everyone this season. Pearl-embellished styles were featured in both Alice + Olivia and Giambattista Valli’s collections, while ultra-wide and padded options were a Dior must-have.

3.  Polo collars

Reminiscent of private school uniforms, this preppy classic top has become this season’s staple. Polos have been seen on the runways of Miu Miu and Telfar, and on musicians like Billie Eilish wearing Gucci and Selena Gomez sporting Victor Glemaud. Pair a polo with a chic plaid skirt for the ultimate classic and preppy look or with a pair of distressed jeans and boots for a more street style-inspired look.

4. Sweater vests

There’s no denying that sleeveless knits have been seen all over the runways. As the temperature drops, there’s no better time to layer up in on the season’s comfiest trend. Sweater vests are perfect for a day to night ensemble. Wear one over a t-shirt and jeans during the day, or tuck into a skirt with boots at night.

5. Pleated skirts

Currently trending at upscale brands like Christian Dior and Prada, the pleated skirt is everything. You can opt for mini or mid-length skirts; pleats dress up any look while adding depth and layers.

A pleated skirt pairs perfectly with baggy sweaters and cardigans. An oversized knit, whether loose or tucked in, would be an ideal accompaniment to your pleated skirt.
