A Guide: Finding a Balance Between Social Media & Alone Time

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

In this day and age, it is hard to find ACTUAL alone time. Even though you may be physically alone, if your phone is in your hand and you are staring down at the screen, you really aren’t alone. Especially in college when you have roommates, classes, meetings, on top of calling your friends and family from back home while walking across campus. Alone time is slim to none.

Here are five simple tips to get you your fixin’ of TLC with yourself:

1. Get your butt out of bed and wake up 15 minutes earlier than the rest of your roommates. Grab your cup of coffee and sit outside to get your day started. It is healthy to collect your thoughts before your mind starts going all over the place for the day. PLOT TWIST: leave your phone and computer in your room.

2. This tip is helpful for alone time and studying purposes. Whenever you are doing homework or cramming for a test, put your phone on “Do Not Disturb.” You won’t be getting any notifications, it will just be you and your books, and you will be a lot more productive.

3. Social media like Facebook, Snapchat stories, Instagram, Twitter do not need to be checked every hour. I have gotten to the point where I do not even have time to respond to people’s text during the day, nevertheless check every social media imaginable. Refrain from checking these periodically throughout the day and save it for right before you go to bed.

Now, these last two tips may seem crazy for you people glued to your phone but I promise you can do it…

4. DELETE YOUR APPS FROM YOUR PHONE. Woah… never thought of that one, huh? You can still check your social media on your laptop, but not having it on your phone makes it less convenient and less tempting.

5. Last but not least, the grandfather of them all… GO SOMEWHERE WITHOUT YOUR PHONE. I’m not talking about just going outside for 15 minutes without your phone. That is wimpy. Walk downtown, grab a bite to eat, sit and do homework and leave your phone in your room.

Alone time is good for the soul. Break away from the social media centralized world we live in and snap back into reality.
