Sassy But Classy: Lessons on Elegant Back-Sass from Maggie Smith

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Millersville chapter.

Ahhh, Dame Margaret Natalie Smith. Better known as Maggie Smith, or even better as the one and only Professor McGonagall. She’s been so much more than the best head of house at Hogwarts, though. Mrs. Smith has had more than enough success in theatre, film, and television, and she has had the best attitude the entire way through. Here are some tips from the sass-master herself:

1. Putting people in their place does not have to sound crude.

Passive aggressiveness is your best friend! Use it wisely.

2. Even if you know you’re right, there is strong nobility in backing down.

Not every battle needs fought.

3. Being the classiest lady in the room is a full time gig.

4. Standing up for what you believe in can look elegant AF.

Everyone likes a strong female lead.

5. Knowing how to politely ignore people you hate is an art. Perfect it.

Sometimes ignoring people is harder than it looks which makes her the queen.

6. If you have to slap them… slap them. But slap them gracefully.

You gotta do what you gotta do.

7. You cannot be expected to keep your cool all the time. It’s okay to lose it every now and then.

Someone pass the wine.

8. You have to have the perfect “you’re an idiot” look ready at all times.

If you have a class with some pretty irritating people, this should be easy for you.

9. You must do what must be done.

10. Never be afraid of who you are.

Be proud of yourself, flaws included!

And that’s how it’s all done, collegiettes!
