When we are little, life feels like magic since we are new to the world. We still believe in things like Santa Claus and the fairytales that we read about. We look to our parents for life’s answers because we think that they have life all figured out. We dream that we can be and do anything someday. We do not have judgment instilled in us yet, and everyone that we meet instantly becomes our friends.

Then, one day, we just grow up, and that magic aspect of life seems to vanish into thin air. We realize that those fairy tales were make believe. We find out that our parents were the ones putting our presents under the tree. We understand that our parents and adults like them are just bigger kids out in the world still trying to figure out life themselves. We get beaten down by the harsh realities of life that tell us maybe we are not so cutout for that dream job. We experience judgment and mistreatment, and we find it harder to connect with others so easily.

The mundane routine of going to work every day, attending classes, taking the same drive to the same places, and seeing the same faces makes it feel like our life is just a constant loop of the familiar. However, if you are a glass half full kind of person like me, then you know that even on those repetitive days, there are still glittering instances within them that make us feel like life is worth it, a small number of magic moments that still remain.

To me, the one true magic aspect of life that is always out there, no matter your age, is love. We seek love, we desire love, we find love, we immerse ourselves in love, we are ripped apart by love, we are changed by love, but we never stop accepting or showing love nonetheless (even if we do not want to admit that to ourselves).

When you are in love, you feel like the whole world sees you; everything is a little brighter. You feel like a kid again; you feel like all is right with the world. Your inner child steps back into the spotlight, and your view on life is through their eyes again. Suddenly, you are not so cynical about life anymore, for it has been given a new meaning and you now have someone to accompany you in your future endeavors. Those tedious days now feel like holidays because they have something so new and fulfilling added to them.

A phone call, a text, a visit, a date, a smile, a laugh, a kiss, a hug. All these little moments wrapped up in being in love consume your days and fill your heart with the utmost of joy. All it takes is that one person to totally change your demeanor in an instant; just their existence in your life is enough. Knowing that someone outside of your family and friends genuinely cares for you in such a different, indescribable kind of way makes you feel so incredibly worthy of all that life has to offer. Worthy of being here, worthy to love and be loved, the one thing that we all have in common at the end of the day.

To be intimately connected to a total stranger from a whole other world of their own is quite a special concept. Somewhere, somehow, you were meant to come together and share this life that you were put in at the same time. Taylor Swift refers to this phenomenon in her song, “Invisible String”, saying, “Isn’t it just so pretty to think, all along there was some invisible string tying you to me?”

Whether that person on the other end of your string came into your life for a season, a reason, or a lifetime, take a moment today to be grateful for them because to experience love at any point in your life is to be blessed with a little touch of magic.
