Volunteering for McGill Students’ Nightline: An Interview with Maria Som

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

McGill has a ton of student-run organizations that provide important services to fellow students, especially in regards to mental health. Among these is Nightline, which is arguably one of the most useful services offered on campus. We asked Maria Som, a former Nightline volunteer, to talk about her experience with the service and how you can get involved!

Jillian Giberson for Her Campus McGill (HC McGill): What exactly is Nightline?

Maria Som (MS): Nightline is a confidential, anonymous, and non-judgemental listening service. It’s run by McGill student volunteers and we aim to provide the community with support which can range from information to crisis management and referrals.

HC McGill: How did you get involved in Nightline?

MS: I applied to Nightline hoping that I could learn the skills to help my sister when she was diagnosed with depression. I wanted to be a good support system to both her and others who struggle with their mental health. I found that in volunteering here, I’ve learned to be a more empathetic active listener and I’m grateful to Nightline for enabling me to support others.

HC McGill: What is the most impactful part of working for Nightline for you?

MS: I’ve found being able to help people the most meaningful part of volunteering at Nightline. It’s really rewarding to leave a shift and know that you’ve helped someone through a panic attack or even just de-stress during finals season.

HC McGill: Are there opportunities for those interested to also get involved in nightline?

MS: Yes, absolutely! Nightline recruits new volunteers every semester and we’re looking for students who are passionate about providing a listening ear for others. If you’re interested in helping, you can email nightlinerecruitment@gmail.com
