Six Spooky Netflix Hits: Stream & Scream This Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

To binge or not to be binge?

Midterms got you down? Looking for something to do this Halloween that doesn’t involve drinking yourself into the ground? Well, look no further! Change into your comfiest pj’s, cuddle up with a big bowl of candy, and get ready to binge your heart out with these spooky Netflix hits.

1. Black Mirror:

With three seasons and counting, this Twilight Zone-esque anthology grapples with the, um, unintended consequences of technological advance (like robotic pollinating bees burying themselves into people’s brains.) After the Black Mirror experience, you’ll never look at your phone the same way again. After all, sometimes the scariest thing of all is the thing you never would have suspected. I’ve got my eye on you, Siri!

2. Stranger Things:

A missing boy + government conspiracies + secret experiments + supernatural powers = a 10/10 viewing experience. This already cult show returns to screens on October 27th.

3. The Sixth Sense:

The OG ghost story that produced one of the most iconic lines in movie history (“I see dead people,” anyone?) AND launched director M. Night Shyamalan’s horror film career. This cult classic revolves around a young boy haunted by his ability to see and communicate with the departed. Also featuring: one of the greatest plot twists of all time.

4. Coraline:

Okay, okay. It’s an unconventional choice, I know, but hear me out before you write off this animated flick as being just a “kids’ movie.” Our spunky heroine, the eponymous Coraline, uncovers a secret tunnel that leads to an alternate dimension, where her parents have buttons for eyes and will do anything to get her to stay forever. A mild spook for those who dig the Tim Burton Nightmare Before Christmas vibe.

5. It Follows:

After having sex with her boyfriend, a college student discovers that she has been “cursed.” The only way she can cure herself is by passing on the mysterious disease to someone else. It Follows, like the title suggests, will stay with you for days and keep you dreaming of survival plans.

6. Hush:

A deaf young woman lives in isolation, surrounded by nothing but woods. One night, a masked stranger appears at her window; with not another soul around for miles, she is forced into playing a terrifying game of cat-and-mouse with her intruder. Hush is a heart-pouding thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The minimal dialogue and deafening silence only enhance the creep factor by 1000%.

Happy Hallo(watching)!
