No Recipe, No Problem: 5 Meal Ideas You Can Get Creative With

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

One phrase that I always hear from friends that don’t cook isn’t that they don’t want to, but rather that they never have the ingredients they need at home. When going to the grocery store is also a problem (read: too lazy to go), calling your favourite restaurant for delivery is the best option you have. In my opinion, recipes are mainly guidelines that can tell you what or how much to add but at the end of the day it is up to you to use whichever spices you like or, or to make the executive decision to leave out that kale that you never got along with anyway. Here are five recipes that you can use in order to get inspired;

Breakfast

Mini Frittatas

These frittatas are very easy to prepare and actually good for you. What makes them even better is that you can make them ahead of time and eat them when you’re rushing to that 8:30 class. They taste just as well warm as they do when they’re cold so you don’t have to worry about heating them up. You can add meat or skip it and make an awesome vegetarian version. Find a recipe to use as a guide here.

Chia Seed Breakfast Bowl

For those out there that like something sweeter in the morning, chia seed bowls are wonderful. Chia seed bowls can be customized very easily, hence instead of following recipes word by word you can go ahead and get creative. You can add nuts, honey and some spices to make it more winter-friendly or add in some colourful berries so you have something bright to look forward to in cold Montreal days. If you don’t know where to start from you can follow this recipe here for some inspiration.

Lunch

“Travelling” Noodles

This is a great meal to take to school. It’s a very basic recipe, which you can modify at many levels. You can make the sauce as spicy as you want or add whichever vegetables you like. All you need to do is pour some boiling water and you’re ready to go. A quick tip for this one is to add vegetables that will easily soften in boiling water like spring onions or even a little bit of napa cabbage. A blogger and Pinterest favorite, you can find a recipe that can guide you here

Mason Jar Salads

One problem with salads is that they get soggy very easily and by lunchtime they look inedible. When you are just starting to have a more healthy approach and other things are tempting you, a soggy salad is the last thing you need. With mason jar salads everything stays fresh. You can also add whatever you want but if you need some guidelines here is a recipe you can follow before you figure out what you like.

Dinner

Stir-Fry

Making a stir-fry is one of the best ways that can help you clear out your fridge. You can add whichever kind of meat and vegetables you want. Also depending on how spicy you want the sauce to be you can adjust it to your liking. Just make sure that your meat is thoroughly cooked and you’re ready to go! If you are not sure about cooking times or want some ideas here is a great recipe.
