Grammy-Winning Fashion for Less

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Still salivating over the red carpet at the Grammy 2014 Awards ceremony last week? While there were some wins on the stage, there were also some clear fashion wins. Using these red carpet looks for inspiration, we have compiled cheaper alternatives that you can try during a night out on the town. You can look like Taylor Swift or similar to Beyoncé (let’s face it, there is only one Beyoncé), while still being easy on your wallet.

Beyoncé shocked the Grammy audience that evening with an elegant, yet incredibly risqué, gown. This dress was designed especially for her by up-and-comer, Michael Costello, from Project Runway. While we are waiting for our very own custom-made gowns to be finished (in my dreams…), here is a possible outfit fix to soften the craving. Slightly more conservative than Beyoncé’s dress, this little white number from Forever New shows a little skin with its lace neckline and bodice. The result is sophisticated, but flirty. Take it a step further and pair it with a vampy lip simiar to Beyoncé’s. As for jewelry, an intricate bangle can create the illusion of continuation from the dress to the wrist.

Unsurprisingly, Taylor Swift blew us away with her affinity for metallics and sparkles. Her outfit that evening definitely screamed “glamour” and “maturity”. For a night out, we decided to lighten up the ensemble with a cute mini version of her piece. This little gold number from MissGuided is within budget, and is even under $50! Our sweet Taytay’s play on gold and silver at the event gave a much more subtle and neutral effect. The same was done to our economic version; we especially love the intricate, silver belt from River Island.

Rita Ora pulled off metalic green at the Grammy’s and so can you. Get this under-$100, dark green dress from Motel Rocks. The darker green is muted for the less bold, but the sequins maintain the shine and the glamour we need for our very own awards night. Channel your inner goth with a pair of black, patent platforms for the outfit.
