At the beginning of every semester, we always have an idea of how we want the semester to go, but for some reason, it doesn’t always go as planned. Here are a few statements that we rarely stay true to:

1. “I’m going to excercise regularly/ go to the gym.”

Expectations:

2. “I can manage my money.”

Expectations:

Reality:

You always start off so well and then the money disappears. Seriously, you have no memory of making any major purchases (or maybe you do and you have no regrets), but you wish your bank account would just replenish itself.

3. “I’m going to join so many clubs, be a social butterfly, join a sports team, [insert other falsehoods here].”

Expectations:

Reality:

It’s not your fault Netflix added a bunch of movies/ TV shows that you’ve already seen and need to re-watch. Maybe next semester.

4. “I can totally go to class before noon.”

Expectations:

Reality:

Let’s be real. It’s not just 8:30 classes that are a struggle to get to.

And now for the most important expectation that always leaves you cramming for midterms/finals because it never quite pans out:

5. “I’m going to keep up with my readings/homework and get good grades.”

Expectations:

Reality:

One minute you’re reading for your class tomorrow and the next you’re at a club or a bar on St. Laurent, Crescent or St. Denis. How did that happen? You’re not 100% sure, but you’re also not complaining.

On a more serious note, have a great and productive semester. As the unofficial McGill motto goes: Work hard, play harder collegiettes!
