As school has returned, so has fashion anxiety. The leaves are quickly turning from green to orange, and slipping into a flimsy crop top and shorts is no longer an option. Being an LA girl, I’ve never experienced drastic changes in seasons, but living in Montreal has taught me what it means to transition your wardrobe. For those of you struggling with wardrobe malfunctions, don’t worry. Dr. Style is here to answer all your burning questions.

Q: What do I wear when it’s cold in the morning, but hot in the afternoon?

A: This is an issue shared by many, including myself. The answer: LAYERING! Don’t be afraid to mix and match your tops and jackets. I love a good jean jacket that wraps around the waist so you don’t schlep that jacket around all day. We McGillians have enough to carry already! Additionally, a scarf keeps your chest warm, but is small enough to be stuffed away in your bag when the sun comes out.

Q: When is it time to transition from flip-flops to boots?

A: When it’s cold enough that your toes might just fall off. Or just don’t wait until that point. Flip flops are so easy and convenient, but your feet will thank you when you’re walking 5+ blocks home and the wind feels like it’s piercing your soul. Check out these riding boots or these ankle booties.

Q: What should I do? My leggings are black and my boots are brown!

A: The ‘no black and brown’ style rule is a tricky one, especially with boots season at our fingertips. There are many cases, like in The Devil Wears Prada, where it can be rocked solidly and with precision. Personally, I’m still not a fan of the black leggings and brown boots look, but if you feel it, do it! My suggestion: invest in black boots. They are way more versatile and look sleek AF.

Q: How should I rock tights this fall?

A: Guys. The WHOLE point of autumn is wearing tights… right? There are so many types: blacks, colored, patterned, sheer, not sheer, stripper-y, classy, graphic, plain. Tights are an excellent way to wear your skirts and dresses without freezing your buns off. Some even recycle their shorts with tights. These bad boys are wardrobe transitioning essentials!

Q: HELP! This frosty wind is making my face dry. Suggestions?

A: I can’t decide what is worse: constantly sweating or never ending peeling. Unfortunately, we are entering dry face season and moisturizer is our main method of survival. There are many facial moisturizer options depending on your skin type. If your face is naturally dry, like mine, I highly recommend Aveeno’s daily moisturizer. For those who have naturally oily complexions, Dermalogica’s active moist moisturizer is lightweight, but keeps your skin just the right amount of matte. Remember: just because you have oily skin, does not mean you should skip moisturizing! Keep those faces lookin’ funky fresh.

Q: Do we need to continue wearing sunscreen during the cold seasons?

A: According to Mayo Clinic, “It’s easy to get sunburned in the winter as in summer. Snow reflects the sun’s rays, so sunburn is possible even if you’re cold.” Many moisturizers contain SPF, so there’s no excuse!
