Dr. Style: On the Job

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

It’s that time of the year again…yes, holiday season… but more importantly, internship hunting season. Interviews in general are stressful and making a good first impression is important, especially in the wardrobe department. Even if you aren’t interviewing for an internship anytime soon, there are always professional events to be prepared for in the future. Transitioning from sweatpants to pencil skirts is hard, I know, but we collegiettes have to grow up eventually.

Q: What do I wear to an interview?

A: Forbes says that before deciding on what to wear to a job interview, you should research the company or organization you are applying to. Because every workplace has a different dress code, it would be beneficial to e-mail the interviewer or HR representative; “Can you please advise me on the appropriate dress for an interview with your firm?” Here are interview outfit ideas for both creative and office jobs.

Top: Harrods Pants: Zara Shoes: Beyond Skin Shirt: Orvis Skirt: Topshop Heels: Charles by Charles David

Q: I’m only 20 years old. How can I keep my professional outfits youthful?

A: If you want to avoid the same, boring black suit and white dress shirt combo, play with some colors and prints. Don’t be afraid to wear a fun printed shirt under a colorful blazer.

Blazer: MayKool Blouse: New Look Pants: Avenue 32 Earrings: Nordstrom Heels: Miss Selfridge

Q: What do I wear on my first day of an internship?

A: Your first day is the time to make a tasteful, professional first impression. If you are unsure of the office uniform, make sure to play it safe on the first day. Keep things more conservative, and then later, feel free to play with your outfits a bit more.

Q: How can I play up the typical office pencil skirt?

A: Instead of feeling limited by the pencil skirt + shirt + blazer combination, have fun with it! Play with texture, color, and prints. Or if you’re bored of the pencil skirt, substitute it for dress pants.

Q: How should I wear makeup to work without looking unprofessional?

A: Especially for interviews, it’s important not to go too crazy with your makeup. Avoid bold or extra shiny eye shadows. For lips, keep things simple with a nude color. This video is a helpful office makeup tutorial.

Q: What are some professional shoes ideas?

A: Heels are the obvious option, as long as they aren’t the stilettos you wear to the club. If comfort is important to you, then flats are your best friend. I would stay away from any open toed shoes since many places don’t allow them for safety reasons.

Doctor’s Orders:

If you’re someone way too in love with sweatpants (me!), then try wearing a sweater dress for all your professional duties. They are super comfortable in a hot, independent career woman way!
