Have you ever wondered what the Figure Skating club at UMD does? Well, I’m here to tell you all about it and hopefully see you at tryouts next season!

There are two different types of skating you can do in the Figure Skating Club. The first is freestyle, and the second is synchro. Freestyle is individual skating and synchro is team skating.

For the past two seasons, I was a member of the Red Synchro team. We trained twice a week for about three hours, off-ice and on-ice, at Herbert Wells Ice Rink which is right by the College Park metro station. My favorite choreography would have to be from my freshman year on the team. The team skated to a medley of Stevie Wonder songs for our program and competed in Michigan and Florida.Photo courtesy of @umdsynchroterps on Instagram
Being in a club sport has changed my college experience for the better. As a freshman, it’s easy to get wrapped up in all the new “fun and cool” things to do on campus. So by being part of a sport that everyone around you loves just as much as you do, you’re able to find a team and family. Even with the grueling hours and cold nights at the ice rink, you’re surrounded by people who continue to support and cheer you on.

I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of the Maryland Figure Skating club this season because of all the skaters I’ve met. Everyone is warm and welcoming, so don’t be afraid of how chilly it’s going to get. Grab a pair of skates and come join us next season!
