Dealing with Loneliness and How to do More For Yourself

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marquette chapter.

Very often in college, we feel that we are alone, especially when you go from seeing your friends every day to sometimes just once a week when life gets busy. Being by yourself so much can sometimes become depressing especially with a large challenging workload. Loneliness is not a bad time all the time think of it sometimes as a chance to redeem yourself to be a better you the next day. There are lots of things that are fun and fulfilling to do on your own after homework or just to wind down.

Cooking is a good activity that is enough to do on your own and take your mind off being lonely, and you get to eat a good meal after. If cooking is not your thing or you don’t know how to cook, pick up a cookbook and start small. Food is always a comfort in any situation.

Self-care can also be something fun to do alone. Sometimes making your own face mask and having your favorite meal while watching your favorite show or listening to a good song alone can be relaxing. Treat yourself to a day where you do all your favorite activities alone and keep an activity journal, it is fun to see things you have done throughout time and plan for things you have never done. Also, self-care can be as simple as walking on the beach or going to the gym self-care is different for everyone and some simple tasks can mean so much when you’re feeling neglected.

When you are feeling alone it is good to do things that you’re interested in social settings. If you’re interested in comedy maybe go to a comedy club or a open mic night. It is important to push yourself to go to these social settings alone, you will find some great people with the same interests as you. Being social alone is not a bad thing and meeting new people may be scary but it is very important. Going out to places alone and being friendly pays off when you get connections, job offers, good friends, and having fun without having to make intimidating relationships.

Be you, be alone, be happy.
