Life of a Working College Student: Is it Worth it?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Manhattan chapter.

So you may be thinking about getting a job, but how will that fit into your schedule? Will you have time for studying? How will it affect my social life? The money and experience would be nice, but is it worth it?

Being a college student with a job can be overwhelming at times, but it’s ultimately a great experience. I work at the Center for Academic Success on campus and I genuinely enjoy my job there. I like to help the other students who come to me and the people that I work with. I find it to be a rewarding experience that benefits me in all aspects of my academic and personal life. It helps me to buy groceries, makes me feel accomplished and happy. That being said, if I did not like my job on top of a full class schedule I do not think that the job itself would be worth it unless it was for financial purposes like rent, tuition or spending money.

A typical day in my life as a college student with a job usually begins with class, mostly because I prefer to have my classes in the morning. After they finish, I have about 15 minutes to grab something to eat before I head into work due to the way my schedule is. I always bring extra snacks  just in case I or someone else gets hungry at work. After I finish my session, I either grab dinner or head to the gym depending on the time and if I’m hungry. Once finished with dinner, I then begin my homework. Sometimes I am able to get some schoolwork done while I am at work, but not always and other jobs may not be so accommodating, so I always plan times in my schedule for schoolwork.

While having a job in college, especially during the school week, can add extra pressures and occasionally more stress, it really  is a great opportunity. If you can balance your course load with additional work then I would highly recommend it, however if you cannot there is nothing wrong with that. There are other ways to be involved on campus, feel accomplished, or even make money if having a job would take away from your studies.
