Finding Your People

Ever since I was in high school, I was told that college would be the most exciting time of my life where I would find myself by exploring new places, trying new things, and most importantly making new friends. However, nobody tells you that finding these new people that you will share all these experiences with takes a little longer than one might think. I expected entering my college dorm and instantly making a connection with my roommates that would last forever; they would be my bridesmaids, the aunts to my children and my best friends for life. Although there is some truth to that, it has taken until my senior year to find my people, with a lot of twists and turns along the way.

Throughout my years at Manhattan University, I have learned that making friends is more important than just having people to do things with. I have friends that I go out with, friends that I like to chat with, but no matter what we do together, we are always there for each other. Sometimes having different people to do different things with is more optimal because nobody ever had to pull the short straw and compromise on doing something they are not keen on.

In my opinion, the most important thing you can do when trying to make friends or find your people is be true to yourself in every way. Whether you are a little bit goofy, a homebody or a certified party girl, staying authentic will attract those who appreciate you for you! Although you may not all have the same interests or agree upon every little thing, sharing your passions and personalities with each other is something special that will bring you closer and help you learn new things about each other. Similarly, by taking part in new activities together, you can find even more people to add to your circle.

As someone who grew up having trouble keeping friends while moving schools and participating in sports, I truly cherish the people I have grown to know and love at college. I have made so many memories that I will never forget and experienced things I never thought I would, just because I agreed to do something new with a friend. I hope we never stay in each other’s lives forever, because they are some of the most amazing people I have ever met.

Hi, I'm Fiona! I am a Psychology major and a hopeful future Psychiatrist. I am an undergrad at Manhattan College from Albany, NY. I live with my parents, a little sister named Charlotte, and a dog named Cassie. I am an avid crime show watcher and romance reader. I LOVE coffee and going to little cafes around the city to try out different drinks.
I used to play very competitive soccer but stopped due to injury and now my hobbies include spending money on very expensive skincare products and buying overpriced iced lattes. I hope to study abroad within the next two years to be able to broaden my view of the world and learn more about different cultures! My dream is to go to Spain and watch a professional soccer game.
My passion for writing started when I was in 3rd grade. I was constantly reading books of all genres and lengths and I wondered if I could write my own. I wrote little songs and mystery "novels," short stories, and poems whenever I could. In the sixth grade, I was recognized for my efforts and one of my poems was to be in a gallery at a nearby college. It jumpstarted my love for writing and ever since then I have constantly written down my thoughts, as well as written and published a book for my English class which was very exciting! I love writing about just about anything, especially when it comes to female empowerment and things I am interested in!
