Run for a Cure: Why You Need to do a Jingle Bell 5k this Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lynn chapter.

It is time to get your jingle on! Jingle Bell 5ks are joyful and festive 3.12 mile runs that occur during the month of December every year. Friends and families of all ages come together to run or walk the 5k in celebration of the holidays.

Many Jingle Bell 5ks raise awareness and give back to several different charities. A popular 5k near Lynn University is the Arthritis Foundation Jingle Bell Run. This particular 5k raises money to battle the #1 cause of disability, arthritis. Their goal this year is to raise $25,000 to find better treatments and a cure for this painful disease.

Whether you love or hate running, the Jingle Bell 5k is a cheerful way to give back, while also getting some exercise in for the day. The holiday season is a busy time filled with lots of food. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, it is easy to constantly be tempted by pies, cookies, and candies. Also at this time, people tend to throw exercise to the side with final exams and present shopping consuming so much of their time. With that said, it is important to make a conscious effort to schedule time for physical activity, and a Jingle Bell 5k is a great way to do that.

I may be biased when saying that a 5k is a good idea for the holiday season because I am a cross country runner myself, but I still understand that running is hard, tiring, and bit boring. I am here to tell you that a Jingle Bell 5k is quite the opposite. When participating in a Jingle Bell 5k it does not matter if you are fast, slow, young, old, male or female. Everyone is welcome regardless of speed or talent. Also, there are hundreds of runners so you will not be left alone or lost!

Runners usually dress up in holiday attire which can consist of costumes like elves, Santa, and reindeer. The runners who choose not to go all out and dress up in full costumes, many times at least wear ugly Christmas sweaters, Santa hats, or festive colors like green and red. A Bonus to the endeavor is that each runner receives a bell and medal for their efforts.

A Jingle Bell 5k is the perfect way to spread holiday spirit and to stay fit during the season. I hope to hear you jingling all the way to the finish!

If you would like to sign up for the Arthritis Foundation Jingle Bell Run it is not too late! The race takes place on Saturday December 14, in Palm Beach County, and 100% of the registration fee goes to a great cause! You can resister online with the link below or in person the day of the race.
