Five Places to Study Besides the IC

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LUC chapter.

The Information Commons better known as the IC is Loyola University Chicago’s crown jewel on campus.  A student cannot go a day without hearing the words “I’m going to the IC.”  The IC is the go to study spot for most of campus.  On nights that many students have papers, tests, and projects to do and study for the IC transforms from a tranquil spot to focus over the lake into a hot mess of stressed students.

I personally never like to study in the IC, especially during the chaotic times of mid-terms and finals.  Here are three alternative places to hit the books and focus.

1.      Cudahy Library (The Stacks)

Although Cudahy Library is adjacent to the IC students tend to overlook it, especially the room below the main floor where you can study and even talk with your friends.  A bonus studying here is that the bathrooms are probably the nicest ones on campus.

2.     Palm Court

Located on the fourth floor of Mundelein, Palm Court is a very peaceful area that is completely open and made of glass.  While studying you can look out the windows and admire Loyola’s campus while still having peace and quiet (no one ever talks in there).  The only downside is the heating is bad or not as good as other places on campus.

3.     Lewis Library (WTC)

If you are willing to take a trip downtown Lewis Library is my favorite place to study.  The view from the windows lets you look at the bustling city without having to hear it or be a part of it.  There are always less people there than at the IC and the Lewis Library has its own Digital Media Lab.  Not to mention that Nina’s café is right below it and Lu’s is across the street.  Both places accept Loyola’s meal plan.

4.     The Slug

Located across from de Nobili on the first floor of BVM, the slug is a good study environment.  A huge plus is that Engrained is right next to it.  You could grab a coffee or a hot meal while you get some work done.

5.     Classrooms

After the regular school day many of the classrooms on campus are not in use.  However, the doors are left unlocked and students can stay inside until the buildings close or even later in the case of some buildings.  Get a group of friends together and find an empty classroom to do some studying or just slip into a room for some peace a quiet by yourself.

These are just a few places that you could go to study.  Explore campus and find a place that works for you, not for everyone else.  Good luck and happy studying!
