we become tempted to scrape the rine
with our teeth, cut close to the skin
to get the most fruit, but this part
isn’t sweet, this is bitter and tough,
nothing like the sugary center
we got to know, when we gnaw
too far and bite the hand that feeds
slip and slice a finger instead
of fruit, we learn by being selfish
and asking for more than the crop
