5 Ways to Start the Semester Off Right

So, it’s that time again. School is starting, and I’m sure many are stressed out. Whether it’s your very first semester of college, or your fifth, we all get a little nervous sometimes, but not to worry! I’m here to give 5 easy tips to make sure you start your semester fresh.

Make your space feel like home!

One of my all time favorite tips is to make your room feel like home! This is so important no matter what type of residence you live in. Whether that be a dorm room, or an apartment, or any other type of space. Make it feel like home especially if you are living on campus because this is essentially your home for quite some time. Make sure your space is clean and free of clutter. A sharp mind will thrive best in a space that is clean. Also, make sure it is cozy. Add some decor around your space, have comfy bedding, and mood lighting is where it’s at. Personally, the big light is a big no for me, so I have alternative lighting pretty much everywhere.

Plan some outfit combos!

Planning makes everything easier in all aspects of life. Something that can really help set you up for success is planning out outfits. This eliminates rushing to find something that matches in the morning. You can do this the week before classes start or even before the start of every week, but what you do is find some tops (you can start with five) and match some bottoms to each top. Pair basics with prints, or basics on basics. Whatever combos feel like you, just make sure you have at least five outfits that you know work together and that you can just throw on when you’re in a rush. Bonus tip: There are several apps that can help with this too! Many of these apps act as a digital closet and let you upload pictures of your clothing items and make outfits right one your phone. Think Cher’s closet from “Clueless” but in a 2026 way.

Map out campus and your classes!

If it is your first time on your campus, it is very important to map out where everything is. Figure out how far away everything is from your residence. This isn’t just classes, this includes the dining locations, the library, the gym, etc. Once you’ve gotten familiar with the campus, walk around to find all of your classes. (This also applies if this isn’t your first time.)  Don’t just walk to the building, go inside and find exactly where your classroom is because you might think you know how long it takes to get to the building, but that time can change if you aren’t on the first floor. This can be a bit time consuming but trust me, it will help you!

Read your syllabi!

I cannot stress this enough! Most of the time professors will put all assignment due dates in the syllabus, and you should read these carefully, and probably write them down somewhere. Professors will also write out their policies and expectations. This gives you some insight on what to expect for their class. It is so important that you read these before classes start, but don’t stop there. Check it regularly and refer back to it if you aren’t sure about something that’s class related. More than likely it’ll be written in the syllabus.

Don’t Stress!

This is really the most important tip of all. Don’t stress about it! Chances are that you’ll make mistakes, and have learning moments, but that’s inevitable, so why stress about it? Make sure you have fun at college, and get involved on campus. You will truly find your people by doing this, and you’re going to end up having so much fun.

Have a great semester everyone!!
