Though we hate to admit it, midterm season is most definitely upon us. Here are some helpful steps to surviving the next two weeks:

1.     HYDRATE

Studies have shown that staying well-hydrated is instrumental to proper brain function and productivity. When you’re chugging those cups of coffee, make sure to balance them with some water. Coffee is known to be one of the most dehydrating drinks, so don’t let it put a damper on your studies.

2.     REST UP

Yes, it’s easy to stay up late while studying (or even pull an all-nighter if you’re really trying to cram), but sleep is the best way to keep your body healthy and rejuvenated. If you want to avoid getting sick, a good night’s sleep is your best protection.  Instead of deciding to push through those wee hours of the night, take a break and put yourself to sleep. Your body will thank you in the morning.

3.     EAT WELL

We all love to binge eat chips and candy while trying to give ourselves instant energy for a long night of studying. However, these high fat and low protein foods are most likely harming you more than they’re helping you. Trade in your vending machine snacks for a bag of grapes or carrots and ranch. Even a handful of almonds, which are rich in Vitamin E and essential minerals, will help give you the energy you’re looking for.

4.     EXERCISE

When midterms come around, everyone is stressed and feels like they don’t have time to do anything but bury themselves in books and homework. You must remember that staying fit and exercising is still important during these times. Just a 30-minute break in your studies to go for a run or do some yoga can be extremely beneficial to both your mental and physical state. Keep that body moving and you’ll be better off emotionally and productively for those long nights of studying ahead.

Helping your body stay healthy during times of stress is very important. No one likes studying and no one likes getting sick. While studying is inevitable, following the four steps above can help protect you from being more susceptible to the common cold or infection. Taking the extra minute to buy a water instead of coffee or choosing fruit instead of something fatty will be worth it in the long run. Study hard, while also helping your body stay in the best shape possible. Good luck, ladies!
