How to Keep Your Mood Up When the Rain is Coming Down

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LMU chapter.

Ever since leaving cold, snowy New Jersey to travel back to sunny Los Angeles for my second semester of sophomore year, I’ve noticed that the weather is one of the most influential factors when it comes to determining my mood. When it’s sunny, I feel on top of the world – ready to run a couple miles, go on a hike, dance on the beach, or do whatever I can as I soak up the rays. When it’s cloudy, there is little to no such thing that can motivate me. I think many people can relate to the struggle of waking up, looking outside, and seeing nothing but a gloomy sky and wanting to just crawl right back into bed after seeing the clouds. The question is: what can we do to stop the weather from ruining our day?

Here are a few things I like to do to get my mood up when the weather is just not doing it for me!

Get ready.

Change out of your pajamas! You don’t have to change into a complete outfit – maybe it’s just what you’re going to wear to workout. Whatever it is, the physical act of putting on a new outfit really helps guide me to be more productive throughout  the rest of my day. Staying in pajamas will only make you want to get back into bed. Splash some water on your face, brush your teeth, and go do whatever your morning routine is or whatever will wake you up and get your day started on the right foot.

Do some form of exercise – even just for 5 minutes!

This step is a crucial one when it comes to boosting your mood. I PROMISE it is so worth it! Even though you really don’t want to move your body, you’re going to feel so good after. My roommate and I have been loving MADFIT on Youtube; she has anything and everything you could want – a 5 minute cardio dance workout, a 20 minute HIIT, and so much more. These are easy to do inside your house and are absolutely perfect for when the weather isn’t great!

Cook a yummy, healthy meal!

I know a lot of us have been enjoying ourselves in the kitchen since quarantine started, so why stop now? When the weather is cold and damp, I crave things that will keep me warm and full. Whip up a hearty bowl of oatmeal with all the toppings or maybe for lunch make an easy, delicious soup – I love premade chicken tortilla soup from Costco and simply add in Greek yogurt, a sprinkle of cheese, and, of course, sliced avocado. Delish!

Paint, read, have a movie night, or do something unusual!

The other day it was extremely gloomy outside and I felt so bored, but didn’t know what it was that I wanted to do. My friend looked at me and said, “We should buy canvases and paint something!”. Now, am I an artist? No, not at all. But I still loved the idea. Doing fun things outside of your normal routine can really brighten up your day! Maybe you don’t want to paint – that’s okay! Pick up a book you’ve been meaning to read or plan to have a fun movie night with your roommates (with popcorn and M&Ms of course).

I hope these four little tips and tricks help you out. Now, when that next rainy day comes along, you’ll be fully prepared!
