In August of 2015, I set a goal for myself to try and run three miles for three days every week. Back then, this seemed like a lofty and annoying task, however I was unaware of the life-changing journey I was about to embark on. I started running in the mornings and I quickly started to notice some major benefits. Now, I generally run 4/5 mornings per week and here are my five reasons why I think everyone should start off their day with a run or just a workout!
1. You don’t have to feel guilty about grabbing that sweet for breakfast!
Â
I mean, I am not recommending eating eight donuts per day or anything crazy, but treat yourself! You earned it! Â
2. If you go to a gym, it gives you a community of people that you look forward to seeing.
Â
Personally, I love running on the treadmill and joining a gym has totally changed my experience! It’s always great to see familiar faces even when you are grinding it out at 8am. Â
Â
3. Working out in the morning allows you to keep burning calories throughout the day and increases your metabolic rate!
Â
Â
You are already getting the benefit of burning calories immediately when you are working out, but the physiological effect of EPOC allows your body to continue burning calories for long after you finish your workout! EPOC is post exercise oxygen consumption. It is the amount of oxygen, which your body needs to revert back to homeostasis.
Â
4. Your focus is increased throughout the day!
Â
Â
Working out in the morning has been proven to increase your focus for the rest of the day. Personally I love to get a good run in before a big test, because I feel much more alert while taking the assessment!
Â
5. Working out in the morning improves your state of mind for the rest of the day!
Â
While some people think “runner’s high” is a hoax, I know it to be the best effect of working out! The feeling of peace and solace I get after a workout makes me feel super calm and generally gives me a more positive outlook on the day!
Â
I know working out can be annoying, especially early in the morning, but I hope I gave you a couple of reasons that will encourage you to try an early morning workout which will improve your day and quality of life!
