A playlist for ‘the 9am struggle’

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Leeds chapter.

The perfect playlist to get you to your 9am.

Semester two is well underway. We’re only on week two but the post-exam feeling of freedom and drunkenness is nothing more than a faint memory. This means deadlines are looming once again and we’ve actually got to get up and go to lectures?!

Dragging yourself out of bed for a 9am has never been harder; it’s still gloomy and dark outside but there’s no advent calendar chocolate to ease the pain and summer sunshine is still a good few months away. I don’t know about you, but a banging playlist always has the capacity to brighten up my day by helping me boogie through Hyde Park and in to Roger Stevens for 9am.

So this week, here are a few of my favourite tunes that cheer me up on the long, treacherous walk to uni.

  1. Dua Lipa – ‘Be the One’

An inspiration to every edgy girl in Leeds; Dua Lipa has released yet another great pop song. ‘Be the One’ has the perfect hypnotic beat and soothing vocals to wake you up gently.

  1. Robbie Williams – ‘Rock DJ’

Just those opening few seconds give me the sass I need to get me through the day. Just be careful you don’t end up belting out the chorus mid-way down the street!

  1. Zara Larsson – ‘Lush Life’

If I close my eyes when listening to this I almost feel like I’m basking in the sun holding a mojito. (I’m not advising you to close your eyes whilst walking or crossing roads.)

  1. Chaka Khan – ‘I’m Every Woman’

Talk about feeling empowered and ready to seize the day. Chaka Khan gets me feeling like I want to bang out some essays, never drunk text anyone and join the UN in the fight for women’s rights.

  1. Catfish and the Bottlemen – ‘Twice’

Catfish are the perfect example of modern day rock. ‘Twice’ won’t leave you head banging like you’re in 2010, but the lyrics will comfort you by assuring you you’re not the only hungover mess.

  1. Ellie Goulding – ‘Anything Could Happen’

Who knows, anything could happen – maybe your lecture will actually be informative and you’ll head to the library afterwards for a day of revision?

  1. James Bay – ‘Best Fake Smile’

There’s nothing better than James Bay telling you that you don’t actually have to fake smile at all your course mates. Just sit at the back, clutch your coffee and frown. It’s totally fine, it’s only 9am after all.

There you have it!

In the morning I don’t like to go for anything slow, deep, and meaningful that will send me back to sleep. But I also don’t want any loud, fast electronic beats. I find pop music is always easy listening and a cheery, happy medium. Of course, if you don’t feel inspired by a few cheesy pop songs, you could just stay in bed and convince yourself you’ll watch your lecture on the VLE later.
