Five Things I’ve Learned During my Second Year at University

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Leeds chapter.

Almost a year ago, I was finishing up my first year of University and I wrote my first Her Campus Article about everything I learnt. Today I went back to reread that article and below I have revisited each of the 5 things I learnt in my first year of uni and updated them now I have two student years under my belt. Please learn from my mistakes…

There Will Always be Drama

You will always have the housemate who doesn’t pull their weight or the one who plays video games at 2am. Just deal with it and voice your problems instead of being passive-aggressive, nobody is perfect.

I no Longer Need to do a Weekly Shop with £8

Last year I used my second point to brag about how I had been to Aldi for my weekly shop and only spent £8. I still think this is impressive. But with my student house being £2000 cheaper than my Leodis room – I no longer have to be so frugal. If you are going into the first year, don’t waste all of your loan on your halls. If I could go back in time I would choose a cheaper accommodation. It might be further from university and have a shared bathroom (just request an all-girls flat!) but you can spend your loan on the important things – pub food and The Key Club.

Seminars are STILL Important!

Seriously just go – or just log into blackboard collaborative and attend from your own bed these days.

I Was Correct – Wooden Flooring Really Does Suck

I spent my fourth point ranting about how much wooden flooring sucks because it never looks clean and I was constantly on my hands and knees sweeping it up. I stand by this. My grotty office carpet in my new room is light years better.

It Really Does Go Fast

I cannot believe that I wrote the original article 11 months ago, and due to the current situation with Coronavirus, my second year has been cut short. 11 months ago I believed that University was going too fast! I spoke about how I can’t wait to take my second year by the horn and make the most of everything that Leeds has to offer. I definitely did this! I have been active in three societies and I am the new Her Campus 2020/21 President.

The current situation has only reinforced that this special time as students is so limited. Make sure you make the most of it!
