Imagine this: it’s opening weekend and the movie theatre is full of patrons — young and old. The smell of popcorn and hot butter hovers like a cloud above you. The sounds of people chatting and laughing fill the air. All of a sudden, the lights go down and the film starts playing. There is no place you would rather be than right here. No place you would rather be than watching Captain Marvel!

If you’ve ever watched a Marvel movie, you know what’s coming. The classic Marvel opening, except, this time it’s different. I recommend you bring some tissues cause it might get you right in the feels.

Now, let’s talk about my favourite part of any movie, especially a Marvel one: the soundtrack. The soundtrack of a movie like Iron Man, for example, is killer, but Captain Marvel is, dare I say, better! Your girl (me) loves a good throwback and this movie is set in the 1990s so you can bet your bottom dollar there are 90s grooves all over the place. There are also plenty of girl power songs. In fact, they’re the very same songs I keep on my edgy feminist playlist, so ya know it’s the bomb dot com, right?

This movie, in my humble opinion, is phenomenal. Like, I’m talking about one of the best superhero movies to date. It is so well done. The characters are well-developed, the plot is easy to follow, but complicated enough to give substance to the movie. The actors are great, especially Brie Larson — her witty one-liners will always have a special place in my heart. Sarcastic gals, UNITE!

Now, I’ve seen plenty of movies and love the cinematic experience but I’m not necessarily qualified to write a proper movie review. I just know what I like. And I DO LIKE THIS. But, a bigger point should be made. Beyond being simply a SUPER (yes, I did) enjoyable movie, it needs to be seen and talked about. It’s important to see the representation of strong female characters on screen and to have the conversations they will most definitely spark.

Captain Marvel is the movie we both need and deserve. It has humour and breathes new life into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or MCU for us diehards). It feels fresh while still sticking to the typical superhero origin storyline. It is already my favourite movie of the year and I would gladly watch it again if anyone wants someone to go with (but it’s totally cool to go alone!!).

Overall, I would rate this film a 4.6 out of 5 because of its creativity and its post-credit scenes, as well as the soundtrack and casting choices! You should definitely make a plan to see it. Thanos had best watch his ass cause there’s a new Captain in town and she means business!
