My Creative Writing Goals for December

Jessica Shore Student Contributor, Lasell University
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.

I wrote an article titled I Want To Write A Romcom earlier in the year, and while I still haven’t finished writing a romcom, I’m working on it! A few weeks after writing that article, I began reading my first book of the year. From there, I can finally say that I got back into reading, which only made my romcom-writing urge grow.

I’ve been working on drafts of three projects, two novels (the Shy Girl x Frat Boy idea that I had is one!) and one short story. One of my online writer friends came up with the idea to use December to complete and/or work on drafts, calling it Draftmas. I thought it was genius, and wanted to join in. Since finals are manageable for me this semester, I wanted to take this month to focus on my writing.

I came up with two goals for myself, and I hope to accomplish them both by the end of the month!

Goal #1: Write and finish a short story

As I mentioned, I’m working on a short story that I came up with a few days ago. It’s a one-shot of a preexisting couple that I created, Atticus and Ashley. They met while on a reality TV show, and got together afterwards. I wanted to write a timely holiday short story, and I wanted to explore Atticus’ family further. The story is called “A Very Atticashley Christmas,” and it’s about Ashley meeting Atticus’ family for the first time.

My goal is to finish the story and post it on Wattpad and StoryForge as the first part of a miscellaneous short story collection. I have several weeks to do it, and I’m currently on the right path. I just have to hope that I don’t get writer’s block or end up in a plothole!

Goal #2: Continue the first draft of my main project

While Project Shy Girl x Frat Boy has a newfound title and almost three chapters, I have another main project that I want to focus on right now. My ultimate goal is to publish my debut novel on Wattpad and StoryForge next May, and I’m almost one-third of the way done with draft one. I’m not publishing an actual book, which is less pressure on me.

I’ll call it Project Five for now until I do an official title reveal on my writing Instagram account. This story is a coming-of-age romcom, and the first book of an eight-book series. This one centers around a girl, Lauren, who has five different relationships throughout her teenage and young adult years. The book takes the reader through all five and how she’s grown from each one, along with getting glimpses into her family and personal life.

My goal is to continue with draft one and get as far as I can. I know I’m slow with writing, and I can’t finish this draft in one month. However, getting to at least chapter ten would be incredible. Again, I’m hoping I don’t get writer’s block or end up in a plothole, but I ended up in one with this book before!

By the time the month ends, I hope to accomplish both my writing goals. Every day after finals, I plan on writing and putting the right amount of pressure on myself to get both goals done. Picking a month, setting some goals, and working to accomplish them is a great method for me to try. Even though I’m just writing for fun, I’m excited to see what this month brings!
